Netflix has sued the makers of an alleged and unauthorised musical stage production of streaming platform’s popular period drama Bridgerton, accusing them of copyright infringement.
According to media reports, Netflix filed the complaint against Abigail Barlow and Emily Bear at a federal court in Washington DC. The complaint was made three days after performance of the musical in question.
Netflix has claimed that after the first season of Bridgerton was released in December 2020, the makers of the musical began to create content using Bridgerton on TikTok, where they `posted songs based the show’s characters and story lines. Netflix also claimed that despite warnings, the musical makers went ahead with her actions and album titled The Unofficial Bridgerton Musical.
In a report by Reuters, Netflix said, “Barlow & Bear’s conduct began on social media, but stretches ‘fan fiction’ well past its breaking point. It is blatant infringement of intellectual property rights.”
