Daniel Kwan who co-wrote and co-directed Everything Everywhere All At Once, has responded to the reactions posted by the film’s die-hard fans calling out year-ender lists of best films 2022 that did not include Everything Everywhere All At Once.

Everything Everywhere All At Once is 2022 comedy drama written and directed by Daniel Kwan along with Daniel Scheinert. The film revolves around a Chinese-American immigrant who gets auditioned for IRS, and discovers that she must connect with another universe to tackle the dark forces. The film opened to positive reception.

Daniel posted a screenshot of a tweet that collated other tweets which sound harsh for excluding the film from the best films of the year. The tweets that collated other tweets read, “This film’s fanbase is beginning to rival the Marvel cult.”

Sharing this tweet, Daniel wrote, “The algorithm pushed this onto my timeline, and as one of the people who made the film, this aggression will not stand, man. I know the end of year discourse on film twitter can be toxic af with all of the “Best of” lists that come out, but this really needs to stop. The act of ranking any piece of art is so absurd and should only be seen as an incredibly personal and subjective endeavor.

He continued, “This was an incredible year for movies and there is so much to celebrate, why waste your time on anger? (its a rhetorical question, I know the algorithms have been training us to chase these emotions, capitalism has taught us to see everything as a zero sum game blah blah blah).”

The filmmaker also requested fans to “take a step back” when they see something about films that make them angry and get reminded why they love the film. “Those feelings are infinitely more important to you than any list from some critic who has a completely different lived experience from you,” he further wrote.

Daniel also mentioned how to be part of conversations is an “honor” by itself and to have created something that has connected with many people is enough. The director also requested everyone when they come across an over enthusiastic fan to send his message that reads, “Hi, I’m Dan Kwan, one of the directors of EEAAO. I appreciate your love of the film, but maybe next time you can try to cool it on the aggression. This place is filled w/ shitty discourse, don’t add to it (what would Waymond do?). Don’t feel bad, its tough to keep ur cool here.”
