Royal Challengers Bengaluru star batter Virat Kohli has been fined 50 per cent of his match fees for breaching the IPL Code of Conduct during the IPL 2024 match against Kolkata Knight Riders at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday. “Kohli committed a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8 of the IPL’s Code of Conduct. He admitted to the offence and accepted the Match Referee’s sanction. For Level 1 breaches of the Code of Conduct, the Match Referee’s decision is final and binding,” the official statement read. Kohli was involved in a heated altercation with the on-field umpires after a controversial dismissal.

The controversy happened during the third over of the RCB innings as Kohli was dismissed by KKR fast bowler Harshit Rana. Kohli mistimed a full-toss and ended up hitting the ball straight back to the bowler.

While the KKR cricketers celebrated the dismissal, Kohli was visibly shocked by the umpire’s decision as he thought the ball was above his waist and quickly went for a review. The replays showed that the ball was above his waist when it made contact with the ball but it was dipping on its way to the wicket.

Kohli was standing outside the crease when he played the shot and the ball trajectory showed that it would have ended up below his waist if he was standing at his normal batting position. The calculation was made keeping his height in mind and considering the batting crease as the ending position.

However, Kohli was not happy with the decision and he ended up in a heated conversation with the umpires. The star batter continued to shout at himself while making his way back to the dugout and he even knocked down a trash can after throwing his glove at it in frustration.

Coming to the match, KKR rode brilliant performances from Shreyas Iyer and Andre Russell to register a narrow one-run victory over RCB to take a massive step towards reaching the IPL 2024 playoffs.
