Toyota Motor Corporation has launched the Land Cruiser 70 in the Japanese market again, bringing back a variant first launched in 1984. The latest model combines retro style with modern technology to enhance the overall performance of the Land Cruiser 70. Toyota previously revealed the updated variant at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show.

The exterior design of the Cruiser 70 carries the 70 series’ distinctive silhouette, focusing on stability and utility. The new Land Cruiser 70 comes with upgraded styling elements and additional features like larger indicators, circular LED headlights, and taillights. The SUV also comes with an additional mirror located on the left fender to detect blind spots.

The Land Cruiser 70 comes with electronic differential locks and its original ladder frame. It also gets braking and driving control systems like Hill Start Assist Control, Active Traction Control, Downhill Assist Control, and Vehicle Stability Control. Toyota claims that the new Land Cruiser 70 comes with better suspension setup, improved on-road comfort, and enhanced off-road driving presentation.

The Land Cruiser 70 is available as a 5-door SUV in Japan. Powering this SUV is a 2.8-litre turbo diesel unit that churns out 201 bhp of power and 500 Nm of peak torque. The engine is mated to a six-speed AT, boosting power to the wheels via a 4WD system. In other regions, this variant is available with several engine options, such as an instinctively aspirated 4.0-litre V6 petrol unit in the UAE and a V8 diesel in Australia. The configurations range from a 3-door SUV to a pickup truck.

On the inside, the SUV design has a horizontal layout and updated features incorporating a 4.2-inch TFT cluster and the company’s Safety Sense suite. The suite enables new lane departure alerts, drive-start control functions, pre-crash safety, and more.

The Toyota Land Cruiser 70 measures 1,870 mm in width, 4,890 mm in length, and 1,920 mm in height, along with a wheelbase of 2,730 mm. The SUV will be manufactured at the company’s Yoshiwara facility in Japan. Toyota’s manufacturing plan is to produce 400 units per month for the domestic market. It is available in the AX trim and costs 4,800,000 yen (approx. INR 27.10 lakh). The SUV was first introduced in 1984, and Toyota claims that the new SUV introduced in Japan carries its original characteristics of durability, off-road capability, reliability, and updated powertrain, design, handling stability, and safety performance.
